Alchi Gompa is a temple complex lying on the banks of the Indus river is known as the oldest monastery of Ladakh. Alchi is an important Buddhist location and also one of the monastic jewels of Ladakh. Alchi Monastery is built about nearly 1000 years ago and is also influenced by the Tibetan culture.
Alchi Monastery houses an assembly hall, Sumtseg (three-storied temple having huge statues), Manjushri Temple, and Stupas. Alchi Monastery is home to some of the oldest wall paintings describing Kashmiri and Buddhist-style artwork, elaborate wood carvings, spinning the prayer wheels while making a wish, and huge statues of Buddha. It’s an exciting place to visit which showcases intrinsic details about the Buddhist culture.
Likir Monastery resides on a hilltop alongside the Indus River valley in an isolated picturesque location. Likir Monastery belongs to the Tibetan Sect of Buddhism and the complex consists of the main temple, assembly hall, monk’s quarters. The main highlight is the 75 feet huge seated gold statue of the Maitreya Buddha overlooking the valley. There are also various paintings, thangkas, murals and you will find a library open to visitors wherein old manuscripts and Buddhist teachings are housed.
Rizong Monastery is perched on a rocky hilltop amidst the mountainous terrain housing mostly 40 monks. The Monastery is known as “The Paradise of Meditation” and is famed for its strict rules and regulations. There’s a nunnery situated at a distance of just 2 km from the monastery. The idols of the deities and structures are defined among the Relic shrine, assembly hall, sacred chamber, and Thin-Chen shrine.
Lamayuru is one of the oldest and largest monasteries of Ladakh dating back to the 11th century and housing about 150 monks permanently. Lamayuru Monastery has the appearance of a cave monastery with a moonlike landscape and it consists of 5 buildings. Lamayuru Monastery houses a vast and rich collection of Buddhist artifacts, paintings, statues, carpets, and the meditation cave of the Lama Naropa – the founder.
Lamayuru is renowned for its incredible odd geological formations giving it a stunning lunar landscape that is photographed dearly by travelers. Lamayuru is beautifully promoted as a “Moonscape” for tourists.
