The historic old town is a UNESCO heritage site and a well-planned city built in the 10th century surrounded by the city walls to provide a defense against the invaders. The walls are huge about 6 meters long and almost 2 km in length.
Dubrovnik has preserved its gothic, renaissance, and Baroque churches and monasteries despite being severely damaged by an earthquake. One can explore these beautiful and spectacular views over the Adriatic Sea by taking a stroll on the city walls. There is an admission ticket to access the wall and it starts through the main entrance on the left of the Pile Gate.
Pile Gate serves as the most interesting entrance to this fabulous old city as its pedestrian-only gate with an exciting wooden drawbridge. The Pile Gate consisted of outer and inner-city gates.
Outer city gates were a form of the semi-circular fortress with a renaissance arch and over this is a stone bridge with a wooden drawbridge which was often used to open and close gates for trade and to protect from invaders. Inner gates lead through the main city wall with a gothic arch.
The other gates are the Ploce Gate (built similarly as the Pile Gate for double defence system & served as the main entrance to the Old Town on the eastern side), the Buza Gate (it’s the newest one and opened much later around the 1900s) and the Ponta Gate (this gate leads to the old port of the Dubrovnik town).
Stradun is a busy pedestrian street where visitors and locals explore alike as it is filled with numerous cafes, restaurants, café bars, galleries, souvenir shops, and shopping.
It’s the most unique and picturesque place to visit with residential houses living upstairs and the ground level is for shops with windows and main doors under the arch.
Stradun is a lovely square that holds the historical sights of Dubrovnik and these beautiful monuments are superb examples of medieval and renaissance architecture.
Dubrovnik Cathedral was a 6th century medieval Assumption of the Virgin Mary church which stands magnificent today as it was destroyed by earthquakes but rebuilt in Baroque structure which we admire today. This highly ornate cathedral also holds paintings of the Dalmatians and other Italian artists.
Dubrovnik Cathedral Treasury is home to gold and silver items around the world and important relics and artifacts and it is protected by a wall of glass.
Formerly a market square has been a central gathering point as well as presenting iconic buildings and public monuments within the Old Town. Major highlights include Orlando’s Column, Loggia of the bells (used as a warning sign during danger), the church of St. Blaise (showcasing an impressive collection of artworks and its Baroque façade), and the clock tower.
This large polygonal structure is seen as you enter into the Old Town to Stradun through the Pile Gate built by a famed Italian architect with a cupola and 16 water taps. These taps have a unique carving and the water is safe to drink as this fountain was a part of the original water supply system.
The fountain stands in front of the St. Saviour Church that is an example of gothic and renaissance features. This church has been praised and considered divine as it survived the devastating earthquake of 1667.
Dubrovnik cable car attracts millions of visitors for the charming panoramic views of the old town and the Adriatic Sea. Hop on to the cable car until you reach the upper station on the top of Srd hill which is 405m above sea level wherein you can enjoy mesmerizing views of the old town and the surrounding coastline and islands.
The upper station has 3 terraces with binocular telescopes, a restaurant, souvenir shop, restrooms, and an amphitheatre. Travelers are recommended to visit this place for its exceptional views and they also provide you with certain activities like the Buggy Safari, Hiking Trail and a museum.
